Welcome to Cat Creek, Montana

In 1920, Cat Creek was known as ‘raw, roaring oil camp’ for its 150 producing oil wells . It was the site of Montana’s first successful commercial oil strike in 1920. A four-inch pipeline was built to the railroad in Winnett. Most of the company workers and families lived in tar-paper shacks and bunkhouses. The first post office was established in 1922 with Orville Canfield as postmaster and storekeeper. By 1975, the employment boom was over with only 35 wells operating. In Cat Creek’s 54-year history, it was estimated that about 23 million barrels of oil were produced.
