The Wolf Creek Canyon makes driving on Interstate 90 from Helena to Great Falls worth it. The twisting canyon walls that surround Little Prickly Pear Creek and the Missouri River make a beautiful path to follow as they cut through the Rocky Mountains. The community of Wolf Creek makes the perfect place to pause and take a deep breath before plunging into the many adventures the canyon offers. A few miles to the east, the Missouri broadens into the Holter Lake Reservoir. Holter Lake presents 140 campsites, 3 designated swimming areas, and forty eight hundred acres of boating, water skiing and fishing opportunities. Southeast of Wolf Creek, Hauser Lake Reservoir yields state record Kokanee Salmon, rainbow and brown trout, walleye and perch. Below Wolf Creek, the Missouri provides miles of blue ribbon trout fishing. For a different adventure on the Missouri, visit the Gates of the Mountains. Named by Meriwether Lewis, the Gates of the Mountains are towering limestone cliffs that seem to completely block the flow of the river at every bend, before opening into a narrow passage.
