Native Games Camp - St Mary

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 - Saturday, July 18, 2009

The Blackfeet Manpower program and International Traditional Games Society have planned "Native Games Family Camp" for July 16 - 18 this summer at Lower St. Mary's Lake next to Glacier National Park. This event will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the return of traditional American Indian games to tribes of the northwest.

Chewing Blackbones campground will provide space for team events such as family lacrosse, doubleball, and shinney. Individual events will be bow shooting, atlatl, hoop & arrow games, and canoe races. There will not be available space on site for campers because of on-going upgrades to the regular camp area. Camping and lodging should be sought at St. Mary's, Babb, and Swift Current Lodge.

Originating from a summer games camp on the Blackfeet Reservation in 1999, the games have traveled to culture camps across the northwest. Now the Blackfeet people are honoring their return by hosting this camp.

All people are invited to Blackfeet "Native Games Family Camp." Help us celebrate this family gathering where humor, good fun, and serious competitions bring all nations together. Registration forms for the events can be found on-line at http://www.traditionalnativegames.org

The celebration of Blackfeet ancient horse events will be near East Glacier on July 15, 2009. The above web site will add information on the horse games as it becomes available.
