West Fork Guard Station - Choteau

Here is an opportunity for you to rent a rustic Forest Service Guardstation when it is not used during the winter months. There are a wide range of winter recreation opportunities here.

This cabin is actually the West Fork Guard Station used by Forest Service employees during the spring, summer and fall. It is located about 2 miles north of the Teton Pass Ski Area and 39 miles northwest of Choteau, MT. on the Rocky Mountain Front range. It is a rustic cabin accessible via plowed road to the ski area. Beyond that point renters will need to ski or snowmobile or use four wheel drive vehicles to travel the last 3.5 miles to the cabin, depending on snow conditions. The road to the ski area is not plowed when the ski area is closed, which is typically the month of April. Access during April is iffy unless you use a snowmobile or ski or snowshoe in.

The cabin is available for rental from December 1 through April 30 during the weekends and holidays, and during the entire month of April. The rental season will vary the following year depending on the ski area dates of operation, so that season of use is not presently listed.

No pets or livestock are permitted. The cabin is heated by propane, and there is a limited amount of firewood for the wood cook stove. The cabin is one room divided into a kitch/dining area and a sleeping area. It has a capacity of 6 adults with 2 sets of bunk beds and 2 folding cots. There is no electricity. There is a nearby vault toilet that is accessible to the disabled, except when snow is on the ground. There is a ramp leading into the cabin, but the interior was not designed to be accessible.

There is no refrigerator. Visitors should bring sleeping bags, food, a lantern and a cooler. There are bear regulations requiring food be properly stored during the month of April. Food, gas, and other supplies are available in Choteau.

Recreation opportunities include snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and downhill skiing at Teton Pass ski area. Contact the district office for details on any of the above.

The cabin is located 39 miles northwest of Choteau. From Highway 89 about five miles north of Choteau go west on Teton Canyon road that becomes Forest Development Road (FDR) #144 at the National Forest boundary. Stay on this road to the entrance of the Teton Pass Ski area. Renters skiing in to the cabin can park in the plowed parking area just beyond the ski area entrance. The road is unplowed beyond the ski area for 3.5 miles to the cabin. Bring a shovel as you may need to remove snow berms to get your vehicle out at the end of your stay. Snowmobilers renting the cabin should park in the snowmobile parking lot located about a mile before the ski area turnoff. FDR #144 is closed to snowmobiles during the period it is plowed and maintained for wheeled vehicles. Snowmobilers are reminded that during this time they must use the snowmobile trail to access the unplowed section of the road beyond the ski area in accordance with the existing Travel Plan regulations for the Rocky Mountain Ranger District. All vehicles that will be parked overnight at either the snowmobile parking lot or the cabin rental parking area will be issued a parking pass to put in their window by the district office when the cabin key is issued.
